Ok, so, a buddy had a 2017 xBox One X that had died on his kid a few years back that he gave to me. Was throwing the dreaded E102 error. Then it was throwing the E101 error after I tried to use OSU1 on it. Then as I screwed around, it also gave me an E106 error.
Takeaways... I think one under-mentioned issue is that the USB drive you use for the OSU1 install can be a problem. My whole thing worked after I reseeded another zip drive after the first one wouldn't work. Always remember to check your zip drive with h2testw, and even then, sometimes, try a different zip drive if the one you're using isn't working below.
That gets mentioned a few times in a reddit thread I've since closed and can't find.
Here's the basics.
1. This guy gets it. Best instructions and what ultimately worked for me.
https://www.reddit.com/r/xboxone/comments/do3e3d/comment/f5msw4b/ - "Error E101 when doing offline system update."
2. The OSU1 file can be obtained here from Microsoft. Step 5 is wrong. "5. Copy the $SystemUpdate file from the .zip file to your flash drive." $SystemUpdate is a FOLDER not a FILE.
https://support.xbox.com/en-US/help/hardware-network/console/offline-system-update - "Perform an offline system update"
3. Pulled the Hard drive using this iFixit guide. https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Xbox+One+X+Hard+Drive+Replacement/103020 (Torx 8 and 10 and a spudger is all you need.)
4. Use one of those external USB drive to Harddrive adapters to hook to the PC. It had multiple "errors" to fix as each of the 5 partitions opened up. Windows repaired each one successfully. This did _not_ fix the xBox when I reassembled.
SO.... Tore it down AGAIN. Grrrrrr
5. Used https://www.hdsentinel.com/ as I saw mentioned in a post somewhere to verify the SMART status due to the errors. Harddrive was great.
6. Used these scripts to wipe and partition the drive. https://gbatemp.net/download/xbox-one-windows-and-linux-internal-hard-drive-partitioning-script.34239/
NOTE: I did also do the clear the drive step here using diskpart - https://www.reddit.com/r/xboxone/comments/hlsv3l/psa_script_no_longer_needed_for_hdd_replacement/, but since I had it out, and #1's guide seemed solid, I went ahead and repartitioned afterwards. Realized those scripts do the wipe part before the partition anyway...
7. Reassembled the xBox One x and completed the steps as illustrated in the Reddit link from #1.
8. Took me 2 tries with the 2nd USB drive for the entire thing to complete and be successful.
9. NOTE: It is entirely possible that I might have been able to fix the whole thing with the 2nd USB drive the whole time. Not sure. But, I can definitely verify that the scorched earth method by u/chippdoii definitely worked for me.
10. IT'S ALIVE - WOOT! And, most all my xBox360 content I got free from having a gold pass is there. Fortnite works solid on this thing too. And MOONLIGHT! Solid Moonlight implementation is available too. I think I have some free games from doing Amazon that show up here too.
